• Spikenard is a fragrant root growing in mountains and rock ledges, used as perfume and incense since antiquity, when it was exceedingly expensive and valued. In Bible times, when anointing the dead with perfumes was customary, Mary of Bethany is criticized for pouring a whole jar of spikenard oil on Jesus, but He defends her action saying she is anointing Him for burial, in a gesture of unrestrained love and extravagant generosity. Thus, spikenard is a symbol of worship and adoration.
